The town of Falkland, with it's amazing 16th., 17th. and 18th. century houses, 28 listed (protected) buildings and the historic Palace and Gardens, was used to film the location shots for 1940's Inverness. If you stand at the fountain you can look around and see Mrs. Baird's B & B (The Covenantors Hotel), Farrell's (which is Fayre Earth) and Campbells Coffee House (now a real Campbells Coffee House). As you wander through the town you will recognise many other buildings.
There is a lot to see and do in Falkland including a visit to the fanous historic Falkland Palace and it's beautiful gardens and of course you can have lunch or afternoon tea in the hotel, period tearoom or coffee house.
Culross has many 16th, 17th, & 18th. century buildings that have been restored and preserved with many in the ownership or under the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The cobbled streets and Mercat Cross were the perfect setting for the town of Cranesmuir and you will recognise the buildings now repainted a brilliant white, having been painted grey / blue for the filming.
The walled gardens behind Culross Palace were used as Claire's Herb Garden. A walk to the top of the terraced gardens rewards you with great views across the River Forth where will see the Castle at Blackness.
The beautiful formal gardens at Drummond Castle, which have been used in a number of different films over the years, are featured in series 2 as the Gardens of the Palace of Versailles, France.
On the edge of the small town of Doune you will find Scotland's most well preserved medieval Castle. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, Doune Castle was used for Castle Leoch, one of the main locations for the series.
In the small village of Blackness, on the south banks of the River Forth, is the uniquely shaped Blackness Castle. In the care of Historic Scotland the castle has been returned to its medieval state, removing many vistorian modifications. The castle and the courtyard of the castle were used for Fort William in the first series where it was the headquarters of Black Jack Randall and the scenes of Jamies incarceration. The prison entrance and corridoors scenes were filmed at nearby Linlithgow Palace.
